1 Purpose
This Marine Notice describes the Condition Survey and Pre-Purchase Inspection services offered by Novaveritas Maritime Division (NVMD). These services are provided on a commercial, non-statutory basis and are intended to assist buyers, sellers, financiers, and insurers in assessing the physical and technical condition of a vessel.
2 Nature of the Service
Condition Surveys and Pre-Purchase Inspections are independent commercial services and do not constitute statutory surveys, nor do they result in the issuance or endorsement of statutory certificates under any convention.
These services are governed by a separate Commercial Survey Agreement executed between NVMD and the requesting party (buyer, seller, lender, or underwriter). Results are reported solely to the instructing party unless otherwise agreed.
3 Scope of Inspection
A standard NVMD Condition Survey covers the following areas, subject to access and agreement with the vessel's owner:
| Area | Elements Inspected |
|---|---|
| Hull & Structure | Shell plating, frames, bulkheads, deck plating, corrosion condition, thickness gauging where agreed |
| Main Machinery | Main engine(s), gearboxes, shafting, propellers — operational tests |
| Auxiliary Machinery | Generators, pumps, boilers, compressors, purifiers |
| Electrical Systems | Switchboards, emergency systems, navigation and communication equipment |
| Safety Equipment | Lifesaving appliances, fire fighting, gas detection systems |
| Certificates & Documentation | Status review of statutory and class certificates |
| Cargo Systems | Cargo handling gear, holds/tanks (where applicable) |
4 Survey Report
NVMD will issue a written Condition Survey Report within the timeframe agreed in the Commercial Survey Agreement. The report will include observations, deficiencies noted, recommendations, and where agreed, an overall condition assessment. NVMD surveyors express professional opinion; they do not provide valuations or legal advice.
5 Requesting a Survey
Requests for Condition Surveys or Pre-Purchase Inspections should be submitted in writing to NVMD, specifying the vessel details, proposed survey location, and scope required. NVMD will confirm availability, applicable fees, and survey terms prior to commencement.
